Dorit Cypis

Dorit Cypis is an honored artist whose multi-disciplinary studio practice extends to her roles as educator, conflict mediator and community builder. Since the 1980’s Cypis has explored the psychological, physical and social aspects of history, knowledge and experience that impinge on and develop identity. Core to her process is questioning the role of the artist as both private and public. While exhibiting internationally throughout her career – including the Whitney Museum of American Art, International Center of Photography, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Musee d’Art Contemporain/Montreal, Musee des Beaux Arts/Bruxelles, Walker Art Center, Orange County Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art – Cypis was also developing community programs – Kulture Klub Collaborative (bridging survival and inspiration), partnering artists, homeless youth, arts and social service organizations to build their self knowledge and expression; Foundation for Art Resources, partnering artists and public sites to inspire interaction and discourse; as a founding member of Mediators Beyond Borders, building group capacity to transform conflict to generative relations in partnership with local and global community groups.
