The sound art collective Ultra-red studies, develops, and tests procedures for collective listening that contribute directly to political struggles. Founded in 1994 by two AIDS activists in Los Angeles, today the collective has twelve members based in Berlin, London, the rural southwest of England, New York, and Los Angeles. In Southern California, the four members of Ultra-red have worked for decades in movements around HIV/AIDS justice, housing justice, and the struggles of migration. In late 2012, Ultra-red launched School of Echoes Los Angeles to foster long-term experiments in organizing and popular education among a diverse community of cultural producers, educators, and activists.
